Romantic crushes on fictional characters from books or even from stories can be both enjoyable and rewarding however they can also be time-consuming, energy sapping and wreak havoc with your emotions.
Some crushes on fictional characters can last for years. They can also be very difficult to snap out of (in my head I am currently thinking about my ‘thing’ with Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice).
It is therefore important to learn how to cope with your crush.
The Benefits of a Fictional Character Crush:
- With fictional characters there is no fear of rejection, no long-term disappointment, no risk of pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, no marital discord, no risk of divorce or affairs.
- Things get much easier once you accept it will be a one-sided love affair.
- Think of the cost savings with dating someone who does not exist.
- You will never have to introduce your fictional love interest to family members or friends.
- Your fictional love interest will always be there for you, no matter where you are in the menstrual cycle. Fictional characters also don’t have sporting events to attend, work commitments or nights out with the lads. If you want to spend time with your fictional character just pick up your book or dive into your story.
Learning to Keep Your Crush Alive:
- Think about all of their bad points. These are normally the character traits that make us love our fictional character even more. Sigh!
- Make sure you invest time in your fictional love interest. Forget things like laundry, housework etc. Reach for your book or story and dive back into their world.
If you feel your crush is getting out of hand try some of these tips to dampen down those hot and sweaty feelings:
- Play the fictional character field and read other books or create new characters.
- Write something on Facebook about your crush and the reasons why you cannot stop thinking about them. Chances are there are other tortured souls out there who are also suffering or who have been able to move on from their fictional character crush.
- Imagine your fictional love interest in your world and ask yourself do they fit in? This has helped me overcome my crush with Legolas from Lord of the Rings. Picturing us wandering about my local ‘One Stop’ shop, me, tired housewife, carrying my basket full of household basics (toilet roll, dishwasher tablets and clingfilm) and him, attractive long-haired elf, in tights, carrying his bow and arrows made me see my that our romance might not work on a practical level.
- Enjoy those fictional character crushes, readers!
Take care readers.
My book character Mikey is the cause of many romantic crushes. He’s a typical bad boy but as you will see he’s got a good heart. Check him out.

Oh gosh do you have a talent for making light of the things that we readers and writers actually deal with! Ha! In 2012, during my first NaNoWriMo, I created a character called Senior Warden Vincent Jasper… He of course goes by Senior Warden Jasper. Sadly he has no flaws apart from the fact he is not real. That will get you every time. I have allowed a couple of friends of mine to read the story as I wrote it and both of these lovely ladies confessed to mooning over my fictional man which is totally unacceptable being that I CREATED HIM! But since he and the heroine of the story are so perfect for each other, I have elected to bow out of their relationship and wish them the absolute best. 😉 Perhaps sometime in the near future, other women will have the pleasure of loving Jasper as much as I do.
Hmmmm Jasper sounds like he would bring on a crush! Release him and let others love him. 🙂
You know what? I shall. I just have to get him and his companions dressed in their Sunday’s best before sending them out to the public. Grammer, typos, etc are just as bad as going to a job interview with a spaghetti stain on your white blouse. I just gotta get me someone to edit them up and then off we go. Jasper for everyone!
Yum! Why keep Jasper to yourself!
Although, this is not a fictional character, he might as well be. Do not laugh, okay, it’s okay to laugh, but Johnny Depp. I love every character he plays because he does them all so well. Only if only! 😉
Will allow 🙂
Why Thank you 🙂
High fives on JD
Mr. Darcy! *swoon*

Really enjoyed reading this!
Arrrr Thx Arranbhansal – Thx for making me smile 🙂
I think most of my crushes have been on fictional characters. 😀 They’re so much easier to get along with! (Does that say something about me?)
I also had a crush on a character I created a few years ago. I lived vicariously through her love interest. 😉
Do you know Phoenixgrey85 I really think crushes on fictional characters are the next big thing! All my crushes on fictional characters give me so much pleasure in life 🙂
I nominated you for the Versatile Blogging Award. You can check it out here – http://elenasquareeyes.com/2015/02/07/the-versatile-blogger-award/
Thx a lot – appreciate it 🙂
To name a few …
The roguish Sergeant Troy in Thomas Hardy’s “Far from the Madding Crowd”.
Lieutenant Dunbar in Michael Blake’s “Dances with Wolves”.
Professor Snape in the Harry Potter books (yes, do laugh).
Peter Claire (a 17th century English lutenist) in Rose Tremain’s “Music and Silence”.
And an exceedingly quirky character called Ferdinand in my, as yet, unpublished novel “Counting Magpies”.
This is probably a dumb/dangerous thing to admit, but I based one fictional character off another – kind of – to feed my love for the first fictional character after he died (not just on his show, but in real life). Keeping the love alive.
I LOVE this revelation Suzanne – the readers of Blondewritemore will be pleased you have been able to admit this. Thx 🙂
Very funny indeed and actually really good advice. I once met a man who thought Tinkerbell was real. It was weird and very disturbing.
Tinkerbell? Totally agree on the weird and disturbing. I mean if you didn’t have wings you couldn’t follow her when she stormed off post a row

Thx for the reblog
Oh, my crushes run far and wide and I have way too many of them to keep the sanity. And half of them are of my own creation. But when you create a Scottish book publisher who looks like Killian Jones, you have to crush on him.
I keep them at bay, beating them back with their flaws… which are few and far between, but it helps some. My recent new crush is the hero from Lizzy and Jane by Katherine Reay. Since he’s styled slightly after Mr. Darcy and he loves Hemingway, how can I resist?
(love this post so much)
Thx for the feedback. Didn’t realise how many writers out there have crushes lol! 🙂
It seems we all have quite a few, and most people I talk to mention Mr. Darcy. Personally I’m huge on Captain Wentworth and Mr. Knightley.
Mr Knightley (from Emma) will always be my biggest fictional crush, but there’s enough space for Mr Darcy, Frank Churchill and all those hot elves in my little fangirl heart.
Yes yes yes and very importantly yes to ‘hot elves’.
Ohmygoodness, best post ever! 😀 I too had a crush on Legolas…*blushes*. I had to end it by moving on to other characters. 😉
Thanks for this – Happy Saturday 🙂
Thanks for this 🙂 Happy Monday

Oh man…. don’t we all get these crushes?!
Sigh – yes we do! 💕💕
Oh, I love this!! As I have no life, I get to live vicariously through fictional characters – some have made a lasting impression over the years 😉
I so obviously had a crush on my hero’s best friend that a reviewer knew that I was going to give him a book of his own before I did.
When I was a teenager I had a crush on Lord Peter Whimsey. A bit later it was Mr Knightley. It might be time to re-read Emma.
Ooh I’ve had fictional crushes on characters before. I’m glad I’m not the only one 😍
Nope – there’s quite a few in the crush gang! Happy Sunday!
LMAO what a clever post! Love it! I’m pinning it to my dating board on Pinterest– it’ll throw some people off, but some will definitely appreciate it 🙂
Thank you! 💁🏼 Happy Sunday 💁🏼
Super post; I often write horror and crushes are no good at all because it means those unlikely to reach the end get a bit peeved if they find out one is being kept alive because of a crush!!!
Schizophrenia… the only career where it is a pre-requisite for writing fiction.
This is great Gary! You have made me chuckle – thank you!
Any time Lucy. This post made me look at these survivors differently….I think characters are “using” me to survive 😳
😂 oh Gary!
I had to share this on a group page I belong to, “The Mojo Lab Inner Circle”. We always share the books we’ve read but never admitted the truth to each other about character crushes. Now the elephant is in the room. lol
So enjoyed this post.
Diana – I can’t wait to hear whether there have been any confessions!! Thank you for reading!
Embarrassing but true, this is how I realized that I was crushing hard on a character from a book I’d read: I had a dream where I had some silly dilemma and I was just like, you know what? I’m gonna call him, and he’ll just fix this for me. Because he’s great with stuff like this. And then he’ll probably have something fabulous that he wants us to do tonight after! And I seriously got butterflies in my stomach in the dream (y’all, my face is burning but I type on because sharing the truth to internet strangers is super-important to me) and whipped out my phone, daring myself to call him.
But I couldn’t find him in my contacts, could I?
“Oh, that’s because I haven’t saved him yet… I’ll just dial” I thought. In the dream.
“Yeah, sure. You do that.” (This would be my sarcastic-yet-grounded-in-reality inner voice. in the dream Jesus, I sound crazy right now.)
So I started to dial, but I realized I couldn’t think of his number. Any part of it. And that was, of course, because I didn’t know him. Because he’s not real. And I had a good cry and blamed my sarcastic-yet-truthful self who was suddenly standing there looking at my like I was an idiot and then I woke up next to my husband whom I love and who is totally better for me than the guy in the book because he TALKS about his feelings, and decided I should probably wait a while before re-re-re-reading that book again.
Like, a month or two.
This is FAB!! You have made my day with this. Sigh – been there myself! Thank you! 💁🏼
This was great Lucy, I must admit I have a soft spot for Legolas too, but my fav is Aragorn! 😉
Totally in love with Jamie Frazier, with the exception of that bit of me that is head over heels with Jaime Lannister, it’s not just the name – honest.
Mmmmm Jamie Lannister – defo crush material. I am afraid he’s taken (by me 😂) – thanks for reading my post
I had a crush on Adam Wilde in the books “If I Stay” and “Where She Went.” He was an awesome dude and well I never really got over it! 😉
