17 Reasons why I am intending to remain a stranger to writing poetry #writer #writing

I enjoy reading poetry and I can appreciate it.

I am however, a stranger to writing poetry. Here are the reasons why I am intending to stay one:

  1. Writing poetry scares me.
  2. There is a lot going on in a poem
  3. I wouldn’t know where to start.
  4. The best I can come up with rhyming is ‘the cat sat on the mat.’
  5. I can hide stuff in a story, my bad stuff can be buried. There is no hiding stuff with a poem.
  6. Poems have complicated structures.
  7. I have written myself off as a poet.
  8. I don’t think I have the emotional intelligence to be a poet.
  9. I have a writing poetry phobia – the thought alone brings on the shakes, runny nose and sweats.
  10. I am not in touch with my feelings. Hormones yes. Feelings no.
  11. Poetry is not in my comfort zone.
  12. I am not cool enough to be a poet.
  13. Poems make me cry.
  14. I don’t think I am deep enough to write a poem.
  15. It’s beyond me.
  16. I would have to write it out neatly on fancy paper. I don’t have any fancy paper and my handwriting resembles that of a messy child.
  17. Its never going to happen.

  1. Had you asked me before I took a creative writing course, I would have been with you whole-heartedly. The teacher made me do it. There are two samples on my home page. Both are specific forms of poetry. If I didn’t have rules I probably couldn’t do it.

  2. I dabble in poetry, and wrote it a lot more as a teen than I do now. Writing good poetry is hard and I personally have to write a lot of crap to get one gem.

  3. Not funny nose and sweats hahaha! And give yourself some credit, the cat sat on a mat is very reminiscent of Dr. Seuss which is a mighty thing πŸ˜‰

  4. Excellent! Not that you are shying away from writing poetry but the post as a while. I actually enjoyed it, (big grin). No.’s 9 & 10 are my favourites πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

the trick, I find with poetry writing, is to not worry too much about all the technical stuff and just write…let it flow…

  5. Would have agreed with you wholeheartedly a year ago. I’ve always said I don’t get poetry and that’s that. But something happened a few months ago and now poems make sense and they keep spilling from my fingers. Not quite sure how it’s happening, but it is. You never know, one day it might happen to you too! πŸ˜€

  6. I’m in the same boat as you. With lesser reasons than you of course. If I read a poem I always ask myself, did I get it right? I get more confused when I read the summary before the actual poem cos then I’m like how the fuck does this mean that?
