Do you have a Writer’s Bucket List? What things do you want to accomplish or experience as a writer before you die?
I have been giving some thought to my Writer’s Bucket List. Other bloggers are busy posting exciting and interesting travel bucket lists so I thought it would be fun to do one for writing. Note: I cannot guarantee a writer’s bucket list will have the same excitement factor as a travel bucket list.
As my Writer’s Bucket List is going to take the form of a blog post it will be easy to alter, update and revamp as time goes by.
Ok here we go, brace yourselves:
So between now and when I head off for Life’s Departure Lounge I would like to:
- Receive a number of rejection letters. All the great authors get these. To say ‘I have been rejected by X amount of agents or publishers’ is so bang on trend!
- Work with a professional editor to transform my work.
- Publish or self publish a number of books. (For noting – not just one).
- See my book in a printed form.
- Experience my own book signing event.
- To meet a real life reader fan and have a selfie taken! How cool!!
- To talk at a writer’s conference or writer event (sigh!)
- To go on a writing retreat.
- To go away to a quiet, isolated cottage on my own (plus Wi-Fi) and just write for the weekend.
- To spot my book on the shelf at the library.
- To receive a five star review on my book (just one – I am not greedy)
- To win a writing competition or be a runner up (I am not picky)
- To write a book series.
- To plan and implement a marketing plan for my book.
- To have an author page on Amazon.
- To design a front cover for my book.
- To never give up on my book dream.
Let me know what is going to be on your Writer’s Bucket List?
Have a great day!
Spot on!
Whoa! Looks like I’m hitting that bucket list all right! I even got a 4-star review the other day – but then I realised the reviewer had inadvertently popped in a review for the wrong book. Hey-ho!
BTW, I prefer to phrase the original question more as things I’d like to do ‘while I’m still alive & well’ rather than ‘before I die’… Sounds like one’s demise is all too hideously imminent! π
Lol! Yes agree on your proposed phrase π
I don’t believe you have not accomplished most of that already!
Arrrr thx Lucinda E Clarke – you have made my day! I am afraid not, still plugging away π
My list would be similar to yours. Although, I’ve already managed to check off most of it. So, YAY!
The rejection letter thing isn’t anything I care about, and since I went straight for self-publishing, I don’t have any rejection slips. I do have over 40 published books though (yes, I’ve written a series… More than one, actually).
I’m not bothered about going away to a retreat or scenic place to write, since I live right by the ocean (as in, it’s literally across the road from the front of my building, and you can easily see, hear, and smell it from the window that’s right beside me in our computer room). Plus, my hubby’s really good about giving me space to write (although, I’m pretty sure it’s just so he can play video games in peace).
There are only really two things I want to do that I haven’t yet:
*Experience my own book signing event.
*To meet a real life reader fan and have a selfie taken!
Even so, I do hope it’s some time before I find myself at life’s departure lounge, as you put it.
Yes me too! Great comment and great success! Happy Sunday!
Very good list – the best feeling I had was walking into W H Smiths back in the 90s and seeing one of my motorcycle books on the shelf. Nobody bought it though…even when I moved it to a more prominent position ;-))
Wow – amazing!!! Am so envious! I love W H Smiths too! Thx for reading π
Way cool! Some extremely valid points! I appreciate you writing this post and the rest of the website is extremely good.
Thank you and happy Sunday!

I agree with this list. Soon, I may have time to write again and work on it.
Pretty great list. Here’s one more : get approached about international rights (the offer doesn’t even have to be good, it just is enough to be asked).
This is a great list. I would love to go on a writing retreat someday!
Yes me too! Thx for reading and happy Sunday!
Great list! Mine includes many of the same. My *dream* is to have my novels in print at a major bookstore. And my ~*~*~fanciful dream~*~*~ is to have my novels adapted into movies. A writer can wish!
The more feasible items on my list are personal goals, things I can pursue no matter what. I want to be a bit more daring in my characters – to write more people who are deeply flawed, messed up, broken, even downright bad. And to tackle more ethical ambiguity – good people doing bad things, or things that readers would argue about if they were good or bad.
I’ve been meaning to make my own blog post about this topic, so thanks for reminding me!
Lucy, most (if not all) of these points are totally attainable. Receiving rejections is the easiest to accomplish (haha). Just keep plugging away. I know you’ll do it. I look forward to going to your book signings!
That’s a great list and I hope you accomplish all of it in time to make a new list. I wouldn’t want that selfie to be taken while you’re making last gasps.
LOL – last gasps! You have made me smile again..
Funny you should say “before I die.” It was a cancer diagnosis at 40 that brought me back to writing. I had accomplished a few great life dreams, happily-ever-after marriage, six beautiful kids, had traveled to a few sweet places, but in the midst of life, I’d quit writing. When my Dad came to visit me for my first surgery, he brought my clip file, all the articles I’d written for the newspaper as a teenager when I had my own column. My very first column said I hoped to write a novel some day. It revived that dream. Eleven years later, I am still plugging away.
I would only add “See my book on the library shelf.” Once in awhile I push aside the spot where my books would go and take a picture for inspiration.
Hey thx for this. What a story! I think this is really inspirational. Glad you came back π
That is a great list. I did something like that when I first started blogging, but it was more in terms of goals to meet for the year. Having a list of this caliber would give me more to shoot for, and probably force me to make what I want to happen, reality.
Thank you for posting your list. It has inspired me to do a list of my own and post it for the world to see. Hopefully, it will lead me to people who will hold me accountable.
Yes let me know how you get on with your list π
I like the idea of a writer’s bucket list. Reading yours, mine would look pretty much the same.
Hey thx for reading π happy Sunday!
I don’t have a bucket list. I’ve never had a bucket list. I’m not even sure I have a bucket. That said, this is a great list. There are quite a few on here I would love to do. I’ve been to writers conferences but not a retreat. That sounds dreamy. ππ
Hey Lemon Shark! Thx and thx for the tweet π

Thank you – happy Sunday!
You’re welcome! π
What a fab list! I want the first Selfie with famous BlondeLucy!
Lol!!! Oh E Rawls – yes if I pop over the pond!
I hope you do! Your American fans will need you!
What’s funny is that once you get one 5 star review you do want more! and MORE!!!! I’m pretty greedy for reviews–each one feels great.
I need to experience this π
I warn you it’s addicting π But don’t worry, if you’re like me, you won’t remember that anyone likes your book by the next day!
Thx for dropping by π I will let you know whether 1 five star was enough…
You’ll see….
I have a similar list but mine would also include, reviews from big-named authors like Stephen King or James Patterson who herald my book at a great piece of literature.
Nice! Happy Monday and thx for dropping by!
Hey thx for this – can’t wait to check out yours π
