The Strange Nudges & Signs From The Universe That Encourage You To Keep Writing 💕 #AmWriting #SundayBlogShare #Writing

Sometimes we need a little encouragement to keep going, whilst working on a difficult draft. Writing a novel is not for the faint hearted, (especially romance novels).

Support, confidence and hope can come from all sorts of places; family, friends, writer friends, Twitter friends, Facebook groups, writer craft books, podcasts, a neighbour and even the family dog.

It can also come from the universe in the form of a nudge or a sign.

In some circumstances a nudge or sign from the universe will leave you staring up at the ceiling, whispering, ‘thank you, for making the ginger cat, who looks like the ginger cat in my story, turn up at my back door today. It was a sign wasn’t it? My husband says the cat was only after my prawns but I know it was a sign. I am now going to carry on with the storyline about the cat who brings those two grief stricken characters together.’

Nudges or signs from the universe can be described as thought-provoking coincidences.

They can come via repetitive numbers and words, songs, animals, smells and random objects.

In terms of writing, here are some of my favourites:

  • Your character’s name randomly appearing several times in day-to-day life.
  • A song from your draft novel’s playlist being played on the radio, whilst you are chewing the end of your pencil and thinking about your story.
  • A flower or plant which plays a significant role in your story making a random appearance in day-to-day life.
  • Overheard conversations in a restaurant or cafe which relate to your story.
  • A random comment or suggestion from a family member or friend which doesn’t make sense to them, but for you, solves your story problem.
  • Going into a clothes shop and seeing an item of clothing which reminds you of your character.
  • Animals who look very similar to the ones in your story turning up in your garden.
  • Out of the blue a friend asking you about an old story, which was in your ‘binned’ folder, but bizarrely over the past few days you had been thinking about resurrecting it.

In my own experience I receive nudges or signs from the universe when I have hit a rocky or difficult patch with one of my projects. I will start to moan and then question my story. This is when the universe will start to nudge me back in the direction of my story.

Recently my latest first draft was causing me some frustration, so I put it down and went about my daily life.

On the radio for the next few days were songs from this project’s playlist. I saw the name of my main character plastered across a lorry on the motorway and I overheard two American women sat behind me in a restaurant, discussing something which happens in my story. I had to refrain from putting down my garlic mushrooms, turning round and gushing, ‘do you know, that incident you have both spent the last half hour talking about – well the same thing happens in my first draft!’ *Excited writer face*

By the end of the week I was back to my project with renewed energy and vigour. In my head these thought-provoking coincidences were nudges and signs from the universe, it wanted me to stick with my first draft and carry on.

Some might call these coincidence or synchronicity, but I like to think they are little messages of encouragement from the universe.

Have you ever experienced this?

Are you a believer in nudges and signs from the universe?

  1. When “things” are meant to be they will happen. Sometimes when you head down one street as opposed to another and find that redirection has meant you have had the opportunity to see something beautiful. There does seem to be a reason for everything somethings take longer to work out the reason.

  2. I can totally relate to this, before I started my novel a book on creative writing turned up at work, I discovered several people I know are police officers… that universe was just telling me to write….
