- Starting an exciting new story can feel like falling down a rabbit hole.
- The rabbit, in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, is the flash of inspiration you get with a new story idea. It is so intriguing that you give chase, like Alice did, only to fall headfirst into a deep rabbit hole. Some months or years later you emerge from it, looking bewildered and clutching a load of papers or a finished novel.
- Sometimes when you fall into a new story you have no idea where it will end, just like Alice had no idea where her rabbit hole would end. You just keep falling deeper and deeper.
- New stories can take you away from the rest of the world, just like falling down a rabbit hole.
- Once you stop falling down your metaphorical rabbit role you can find yourself in your own fantasy world, meeting all sorts of weird and wonderful characters.
- A negative writing phase can feel like falling down a rabbit hole. A bad writing spell, fuelled by self doubt can be scary and dark, making you wonder whether it will ever end.
- Opening up social media can feel like falling down a rabbit hole for some writers. Some of us even chuck ourselves into this particular hole.
- The stories and books that we write are like rabbit holes for our readers; transporting them to a different place.
Watch out for those rabbit holes today writers

#3 “Sometimes when you fall into a new story you have no idea where it will end, just like Alice had no idea where her rabbit hole would end. You just keep falling deeper and deeper.” Yup. That is me. Chasing the white rabbit having no idea what mad characters I will meet or where I will wind up. Yes. I am Alice. I think I have a photo from a Halloween years ago…😉
You and me both Lemon Shark!
Pantsers rule!❤
Wait… You and me both as in writing or as in “I also dressed up as Alice for Halloween”?
In writing – I never went as far as you Lemon Shark….was that really all those years ago??
Ah. Ok. And yes. The writing and the dressing up. All those many years ago.
Ascension Graveyard is DEFINITELY a rabbit hole for me. but I am going to keep on pressing until I clutch those finished papers at the end.
