That book where you find yourself crushing on a fictional character…
This was an unexpected crush. When I started reading Keepers I swore to myself that I would not let my feelings get out of control. You see, I wasn’t looking for anymore fictional character crushes, I mean I have so many (sigh). There’s no time nowadays for gazing longingly out of your kitchen window, with a flushed appearance and a twinkle in your eye. Crushes on fictional characters are time-consuming.
A couple of chapters in and things changed for me, readers.
Here is my review of Keepers by Sacha De Black.
Where were your first impressions of the book cover and blurb?
This is a beautiful looking book and it caught my reading eye. I found the bold rich colours of the sky captivating and they contrasted the black well. From the book cover I got the sense great change was coming to Eden’s world.
The blurb was interesting.
‘Eden’s life is balanced…until her soul is bound to her enemy.
When her parents are murdered, the realm of Trutinor is threatened. Then a mysterious human arrives and changes everything.
As Eden’s world spirals out of control, she doesn’t need a charismatic Siren from her past returning to complicate life’.
Was the book’s concept complicated?
Sacha De Black was clever about the journey she took her reader on. She could have just explained the balance concept in heavy and lengthy text, but she chose to do something different. At the start Eden and Victor have to go through a series of tests or ‘sims’. In these ‘sims’ you get to see how the balance concept works. I thought this was a cracking idea and throughout the book I was able to get a sense myself of the imbalance and balance to Eden’s world.
What was the book’s setting like?
I loved the detail rich world of Trutinor. Sacha De Black has done some fantastic world building and she has thought of everything, including stuff like technology.
I adored the quotes from the The Book of Balance, Teachings of the First Fallon and extracts from various records. They helped to set up each chapter but also were a great world building tool.
Did you connect with the characters?
I liked Eden as a character. She’s quite cool and I admired her ability to think on her feet in difficult situations. Victor irritated me and I found myself sending Eden sympathetic vibes as being bound to him for eternity would be challenging.
The character who made me sit up in my reading chair was Trey, who has piercing blue eyes, bronzed skin, brown wavy hair and wears a maroon string vest. *Sigh*
I found Trey to be a fascinating character. He has some wonderful Siren abilities and I struggled to stop daydreaming about him…and his maroon string vest. There’s nothing like a seductive Siren to stir up emotions in a story.
Were there any plot twists?
Yes. Sacha De Black is sneaky. She gives her reader several good twists and knows when to pull the literary rug out from underneath their feet.
Was it a good read?
I found it to be an exciting read, but also an emotional one, which surprised me. Some of the stuff Eden goes through is heart breaking and I didn’t expect to be teary half way through.
My love for Trey intensified as the book progressed. There are some beautiful moments with him and I think my heart will feel imbalanced until Book 2.
I hope Sacha De Black hurries up with the next book.
I hope you enjoyed my review. Have a great day!
